The character of social work
The lives of people, of groups and communities are exposed to constant change. Occasionally, people need support when confronted with these changes in order to be confident in recognising the best way forward.
Social workers ensure that people have access to resources and services. They encourage social change, offer assistance to people in need, and help them recognize opportunities which can improve their lives.

What is social work?

Course content
We train you scientifically in order to enable you to be sensitive to the needs of other people. Theory and practice of social work will be closely linked and deepened through frequent discussion.
Social work science incorporate different fields of knowledge and action:
- History, theory and practice in social work
- Social and scientific references to social work,
- Legal, political and economic framework for social work,
- Methods and concepts, aesthetic forms of professional practice
- Projects and practical study semesters
- An emphasis of this course: theological, ethical and diaconal dimensions of social work

- International, intercultural and inter-religious perspectives of social work
- Theological and ethical perspectives of social work
- Project studies
- Organization of professional client relationships, support of daily life requirements (counselling and work with groups)
- Case history, case management and support planning
- Legal background and administrative regulations of social work

- Diaconal requirements and duties: theological and ethical competences for social work

The structure of the academic course
The study takes usually seven semesters. The fifth term is a practice term. The course is arranged in modules. Module examinations take place as the course proceeds. For this course 210 points (credits) are assigned in accordance with the European Credit Points System (ECTS).
Studying takes place in small groups and includes intensive support and personal advice by experienced faculty members.
Organized activities of the university community help to enhance your motivation to study, your quality of life and learning, as well as your personality.
Admission Requirements
- University entrance qualification or its equivalent
- Special entrance qualification test
If more applications are received than places available, the university applies a special selection procedure for admission.
Your qualification:
The academic degree
After six study semesters and one practice semester you will conclude your studies with a Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.) in Social Work and receive a state certification.
With your qualification you can start to work in all fields of social work. This includes work in church and other welfare organisations, public institutions, private enterprises, and even as independent self-employed professionals.
Those who conclude their B.A. degrees with above average grades have opportunity to proceed with a three semester Masters Degree.
Upon graduation, you have possibilities of entering higher civil service professions or qualify for science and research leadership positions.
Student contributions
The seven semesters cost altogether 3500.- Euro. The sum can be paid in bi-annual rates. You find more details in the study fee section.
